How To Make A Cool Lava Lamp at Home!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The secret behind the lamp’s “lava” is science. Oil is lighter, or less dense, than water, so it rises to the surface. Salt is heavier, or more dense, than water, and sinks to the bottom. When you add the salt, blobs of oil attach to the grains and sink. Then the salt dissolves, and the oil returns to the top. The result? A liquid show for the eyes.

YOU WILL NEED
  • Clear jar with lid
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Glitter
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Flashlight
Fill the jar three-quarters full of water. Add drops of food coloring until you like the color you see. A few drops go a long way! Sprinkle in glitter for extra sparkle. Fill the jar almost to the top with vegetable oil and let the mixture separate. Pour salt into the jar until you see the cool lava lamp effect. When the bubbles stop, add more salt to see it again. Shine a flashlight behind the jar to watch your lava lamp really glow!

Animal Fun Fact!

Jaguar

Jaguars are the largest of South America's big cats and the third largest cats in the world. At one time jaguars roamed all the way to the U.S.-Mexico border, but jaguars are now only occasionally sighted in Texas and Arizona. Most jaguars are found in the Amazon River basin.

National Geographic Shows Us How To Pumpkin Carve!

Okay Halloween Buddies, let's grab a grownup FIRST and tell them we need their help to practice pumpkin carving for Halloween!

Photo: three carved pumpkins

YOU WILL NEED
  • A pumpkin
  • Three tools: poker, drill, saw
  • Paper pattern: make one or print our pattern
  • Tape
  • A candle
HERE'S HOW
Illustration: step 11. Cut an opening in the top or bottom of a pumpkin. Make the hole big enough so that you can clean out the pumpkin easily. Save the piece you cut out to use as a lid.
Illustration: step 22. Clean and scrape the inside. The pumpkin wall you will carve should be no more than one inch thick.
Illustration: step 33. Cut out the pattern or make your own out of a piece of paper. Trim the pattern and tape it to the pumpkin. It may be necessary to make small folds to fit the paper smoothly.
Illustration: step 44. Transfer the design. Using the poker, poke through the paper making dots along each outline on the pattern. Then remove the pattern. (Save it and refer to it while you are carving.)
Illustration: step 55. Drill the holes. Hold the pumpkin in your lap and twist the drill into each hole made by the poker in step 4. Turn the drill gently until it pierces the pumpkin's skin.
Illustration: step 66. Start sawing. Grasp the saw like a pencil and move it steadily up and down, working from dot to dot. Always hold the saw at a right angle to the pumpkin.
Illustration: step 77. Cut a chimney. Light a candle inside the pumpkin, then close the lid. Quickly put out the flame and look for the blackened spot inside the lid. Cut a small hole there; it will let the smoke and heat escape while a candle glows inside.

Welcome To TheKidzBlogger!

Finally, a REAL Kids Blog That Parents Can Trust! From Toddlers to Teens and ALL kids in between. Videos, stories, & links about life's greatest treasures..our KIDS!

Have one of those 4 or 5 yr old cuties that seem just too darn smart for their age??? I mean, you swear at times they have a soul that stems back from times older than yours and without their occasional and spontaneous reminders of how disaray you look in the morning- YOU'D probably be the one running out the house with your shoes on BACKWARDS!!!

Aaaaah...those lil treasures in life that come in the forms of 7lbs of sweet-smelling, swaddled bundles and before you know it, they're jumping up and down on YOUR bed, rocking out to the opening song of Disney's Victoria Justice....or how they are capable of dressing themselves in approx 6 mins in an outfit that gets WAYYYY more compliments from neighbors and  passerbys on your walk with her to children's Boxing class than the one that YOU spent over 45 mins pre-planning out the night before from the undies to the yellow cardigan and matching hair clips.

Or how about when they reach the age that no longer desires time-extended hugs and slobbery kisses from Mom and Dad, so you settle for mere brushes on the cheek with promises that you'll bring them home two pieces of yummy chocolate candy from the overpriced vending machine at work?

Better yet, how about when their gymnastic, dance, singing, reading, puzzle solving or conversational abilities have reached such advanced levels that YOUR paternal instincts that tell you that you have given birth to the next SUPERSTAR are not the only gut instincts that prove strong anymore. Complete strangers and new Kindergarten teachers also tell you that they totally get tingles from psychic feelings that your child is going to become the next GREAT----- (parents feel free to fill in the blank at the dashes, as "answers may vary" :)

Well, our Angel, who has matter-of-factedly chosen the pseudonym of "The Purple Mermaid" as her blogging "nickname" has impressed us beyond inspiration and talents imaginable at just 4 years of age (ahem, excuse me... I have just been scolded, as she has ensured that I re-type her age as 4 and a HALF!)

The Purple Mermaid attains the keen ability of loving and nurturing ALL children in her environment and the awesome magical power to coax those little ones away from clinging so tightly to their mommy's lower leg when she asks them to sign up for the singing group she has just started on the spot...and I swear, right before your eyes you will witness the most amazing, unbelievable, entertaining, cutest "American Idol" style performances right there on the playground.

PS, watch out Simon Cowell, The Purple Mermaid is a force to be reckoned with....

And so, her Kidz Blog unfolds. All videos, posts and creative ideas are imaginations of The Purple Mermaid....(with just a LITTLE technical help from Mommy and Daddy:).... Enjoy!
